Metzabok and Naha
The "God of Thunder" and the "House of Water"...
Metzabok and Naha Lakes
They are located between the mountains of the east of the state of Chiapas, in the Lacandon Jungle; in the municipality of Ocosingo, 105 km from Palenque.
They were decreed in 1998 as natural areas of flora and fauna protection to contribute with the use and conservation of the natural resources of this part of the Lacandona Jungle.
World Network of Biosphere Reserves
This region is fed by a dense hydrological network integrated by the rivers Usumacinta, Lacantun, Jatate, Tzendales and Lacanja, among others; and by the lakes Miramar, Ocotal and Lacanja. It presents lacustrine bodies of karst nature and is a very important area in the capture of rainfall that acts as a recharge of underground aquifers.
It represents an ecosystem of high diversity and fragility; high evergreen forest, subperennifolia medium forest, mountain mesophilic forest and an extraordinary ecological importance for its lagoons and its biodiversity (within which there are endangered species, such as the curassow, the harpy eagle, the quetzal and the jaguar) .
Metzabok and Naha have an approximate area of 30% of the surface of the Lacandon Jungle. In them are settled small communities of the Lacandon ethnic group that keep alive cultural aspects such as their language, dress and traditions; and administer the tourism infrastructure.
