Chamula
Tzotzil community of the highlands ......
San Juan Chamula
San Juan Chamula is located at an altitude of 2,260 m.s. and just 10 kilometers from San Cristobal de Las Casas, undoubtedly one of the most enigmatic places in Chiapas.
Tzotzil community of indigenous origin that exercises its authority based on the uses and customs, there is the seat of authority and the place where religious syncretism has its maximum expression: the temple of San Juan Bautista.
Mysticism and ancestral traditions
The church is sober and its facade is decorated with flowers and circles painted in bright colors. Inside you can see sculptures of Catholic saints dressed in the indigenous style and adorned with ribbons and mirrors. The enclosure, lit only by candles, has a mysterious air that is reinforced by the perfume of copal. The floor is carpeted with sedge.
Their political-religious organization is very rigid, and having responsibilities, such as those of governor, mayor, police and scribe, is a high honor that is granted for personal merits. The "iloles" or healers (men or women) are not chosen, their wisdom is acquired as children and their powers come from San Juan.
Chamulas exercise their religious beliefs in an unequaled way by mixing Catholicism with its Mayan tradition resulting in unique rituals in Mexico; one of them is the "limpia" made by shamans or healers to heal the soul or spirit (chul'el).
