San Cristobal
At the foot of the mountains of Chiapas...
San Cristobal de Las Casas
Founded in 1528 - San Cristobal de Las Casas is located 60 kilometers from Tuxtla Gutierrez, the capital of the state of Chiapas.
San Cristobal de Las Casas is one of the most beautiful cities in Mexico, recognized as a Pueblo Magico. City whose wealth lies in its ethnic diversity and colonial tradition, which shows its architectural treasures in various buildings of the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
In the Jovel Valley
San Cristobal stands out for its green landscape covered by fog and for its magnificent colonial constructions of Baroque, Plateresque and Neoclassical style, such as the Cathedral of San Cristobal, begun in 1528; the Temple of San Nicolás, one of the first in the city, which at first was of only use for the natives; and the Temple and Ex Convent of Santo Domingo de Guzmán, of the most beautiful buildings in the city. Among its cobbled streets you will hear locals speak indigenous languages, you can buy magnificent handicrafts and taste delicious typical dishes.
One of the sites that reflects the identity of this Pueblo Magico is the Na Bolom Museum, founded in 1950 by the famous Danish archaeologist Franz Blom and his wife Gertrude Duby, which houses a large collection of utensils, handicrafts, archaeological pieces and clothing from the Lacandon Jungle; and has a library dedicated to the Mayans and Lacandones. In San Cristobal there is a museum dedicated to each one of the things that identify it. Do not forget to visit the museums of Jade, Amber, Mayan Medicine and Cocoa.
Before leaving San Cristobal de las Casas, do not miss the opportunity to climb the hills that surround it; first the Cerro de Guadalupe, located east of the city, where you will observe a pleasant garden with various images of the Virgin. You can also visit the Cerro de San Cristóbal, from which you will enjoy a beautiful panoramic view of the city; the chapel on the top of the hill is filled with worshipers who come to venerate the image of the patron saint and all is happy with marimbas, food stalls and fireworks on July 25.
